In Montana, the clerks of district court act as district court record keepers and perform all related duties as described in 3-5-501,MCA. This elected office is vitally important to the operation of the district court system. The Montana Association of Clerks of District Court (MACDC) partners with the MSU Local Government Center (LGC) to ensure all clerks are provided sufficienct educational support to successfully fufill their duties.

MACDC members have the option to earn a certificate of achievement that demonstrates competency and expertise of the role and related responsibilities. MACDC provides certification for members who have met the three-part requirements of education, experience, and membership detailed in the certification curriculum linked below.

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the cancellation of MACDC professional development opportunities in 2020. As a result, the MACDC education board has worked with LGC to establish a provisional MACDC Certification Curriculum. This provisional curriculum will be effective for the 2020-2024 certification cycle, and accounts for the cancelled education and experience opportunities by reducing the requirements necessary to achieve certification.

Clerks seeking certification through MACDC during the 2020-2024 cycle will not be required to earn the standard number of experience and education points as many of the opportunities where the points are traditionally earned have been cancelled due to COVID-19.

The MACDC Provisional Certification Curriculum linked below details the reduced requirements for clerks seeking certification who are not currently certified. Clerks who are currently certified and wish to renew certification at the end of the current cycle will continue to follow requirement guidance from the 2019 MACDC Certification Curriculum.

Should the pandemic related restrictions continue substantially into 2021 or other extenuating circumstances arise, the LGC and MACDC Education Board will re-assess the requirements and available opportunities to ensure clerks are able to successfully meet requirements and achieve certification.
